The Place:
The Altolario nature:
Visiting the Albano Valley, the Darengo Valley, the Liro Valley and the Pian di Spagna, you will admire an untouched natural environment.
The Pian di Spagna, so-called from the time of Spanish rule, is a wide green-area at the entrance to Valtellina and Mera
valley.
It is a birds sanctuary for migratory wild-fowl.You can see herons, nestling or erratic swans, maybe coming from the swiss frozen
lakes.
The Albano Valley is a protected zone because there are many different
faunistic species: you can see chamois in the neigbourhood of pizzo di Gino, deer, roebucks and marmots.
This interesting Valley includes the communes of Dongo, Stazzona and Germasino.Leaving Dongo, you go through a very green plain, cultivated with vines, up to
Gravedona.
Back to the REGINA road in the village, on the left, you can take the climbing road to the Livo Valley where you can see some characteristic rustic
villages; long wooden balconies with the front of the houses decorated with important and beautiful frescoes. People with different dialects, uses and customs that are important to pass down to the next
generations.
Our local cooking
The cuisine has two different worlds: one tied to the lake with its natural protagonist the fish and the other, a more mysterious and secret one tied to the Valleys, the cheeses, the mushrooms, the polenta and the game.
The tipical fish are: the perch and the missoltini (lake shad- these fish are dried in the sun and pressed into salt in special tins called missolte), the alborelle bleak and the trouts.
You can also taste a tasty chestnut-tree honey and a acacia-tree honey.
The Miascia a tipical cake made with stale bread, milk, eggs, sultanas and flour.
It is single, but very tasty!
Thanks to the mild climate of the lake in Lenno, you can also find the most northern olive oil
produced in Europe.
